Since 2004, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) has updated and implemented some new requirements for people traveling internationally in and out of the United States. The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA) enacted the WHTI which requires all travelers to present a valid United State Passport or another document proving each travelers identity and citizenship when the enter into the United States from any other country.
It is very important to know the entry requirements of the country you are traveling to if you are leaving the United States. Many countries require that your United States Passport be valid for at least 6 months AFTER you are leaving the foreign country to return to the U.S.. You can check the Department of State‘s website for country-specific requirements for whichever country you are traveling to.
The WHTI has set clear passport/ID requirements for travelers who are re-entering the United States after traveling abroad.
Returning to the U.S. From | Type of Travel | Document Required |
Any International Location | AIR Commercial airplane, private airplane, etc. | U.S. Passport Book |
Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean | LAND Car, bus, train, by foot, etc. | U.S. Passport Book or Card |
Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean | SEA Commercial cruise line, private boat, etc. | U.S. Passport Book or Card |
A U.S. Territory | Air, Land or Sea | Valid Photo I.D. |
The objective of the WHTI requirements is to “strengthen U.S. border security while facilitating entry for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors by providing standardized documentation that enables the Department of Homeland Security to quickly and reliably identify a traveler.”
