Making A Name Change on Your U.S. Passport
Oftentimes, due to marriage, divorce, or sometimes other situations, our clients need to get new passports with their names changed on them. A U.S. passport name change is relatively easy to do in almost all cases.
If you need a name change on your U.S. passport, and have no plans to travel internationally within the next 2 weeks, in most cases you simply need to order a Passport Renewal with our 5-10 business day service or our 8-14 business day service. If you are in fact traveling within the next 2 weeks and need a name change on your passport, you can order any speed of our renewal services. The only difference between renewing your passport regularly and renewing your passport with a name change if that in addition to following the regular Renewal Protocol, you will also have to submit with your documents your original, state-issued proof of name change. This can include an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, or the government-issued document evidencing your legal name change under federal or state law.
Please keep in mind however, that if you are trying to change the name on your passport AND your current passport was issued less than 1 year ago then you must follow our renewal protocol, and also fill out the DS-5504 or the Passport Reapplication Form, as well as submit your original state-issued proof of name change.
If you cannot legally document your name change (through court order or marriage), you must submit your current, valid U.S. passport, a completed DS-11 or Application for a New U.S. Passport, AND At least 3 public records showing your date and place of birth that show exclusive use of your assumed name for at least 5 years.
