The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) Explained

Savvy travelers want to travel smart, and safely. The U.S. Department of State offers the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. This free program was previously known as “Travel Registration”, which is essentially registration with local embassies abroad. Signing up gives travelers the most up-to-date data and information on the countries you plan to travel. The updates include Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts, which should always be reviewed before traveling. Travelers only need to enroll in the program one time. You only need to sign up once, and then from your account you can update your travel plans.

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) Explained

Enrollment in the STEP Program helps the U.S. embassies and consulates abroad to stay connected with your travel plans. This allows them to better connect with you and your loved ones in the even of an emergency. Natural disasters, medical emergencies, and unexpected issues can come up at any time. The U.S. Department of State evacuated nearly 17,000 U.S. citizens during the earthquake in Haiti, nearly 15,000 Americans during the civil unrest in Lebanon, and thousands more during the tsunami disasters in Asia and Southeast Asia. The STEP Program also assists travelers who lost their passports while traveling. The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is one of the travel programs, like the NEXUS Program, designed by the U.S. Department of State to help American travelers.
