State Requirements and the Real ID Act
The Real ID Act is continuing to near the final deadline of October 1, 2020. Some states have needed extensions because of the new rules. It’s taken 10 years to get half the country in compliance so we expect continued frustrations for residents of states that are not compliant. If you do not have a Real ID Act compliant ID, you will not be allowed to board a domestic flight. Travelers in states that are not compliant with need a passport just travel within the United States. As more states continue to become compliant with the Real ID Act, many DMVs are reporting longer than expected wait times. If your state is not compliant, you should begin the passport application process right away.
Important Notes: Please make sure that your name is spelled exactly the same on ALL of your documents. Some names may be misspelled on marriage & driver’s licenses because of a clerical error. If your name on the proof of identity card you are using does not match your FULL LEGAL NAME on the Real ID application, you will be rejected. So get your documents in order first to save yourself the stress and trouble of a long wait and another visit.
